Do medium bristle toothbrushes clean/disinfect as well as hard bristle toothbrushes do?

Posted on September 10, 2010

I was wondering because I normally use hard bristled toothbrushes but I would brush my teeth too vigorously and my gums would bleed a little. Yesterday, I went to the store and got some Colgate Medium-Bristle toothbrushes and I used them today. After I used them today, my teeth felt clean but I have very bad discolorations on my teeth and I want to be sure that a medium will work as well as a hard brush. Or would my dental hygiene habits matter more than what strength toothbrush I use? Thank you so much for your input!!!

  1. I used to think that the harder the brush the cleaner the teeth until
a dentist actually showed me how to brush my teeth correctly????
Yeah there is an art to it
!) Always use a soft brush – tooth polish can be used
    2) place the brush with the toothpaste on ur gum and brush upward (flick up one tooth at a time) all around the outside of your teeth then do the same – place the brush on the inside of your mouth and brush up each tooth. None of this rubbing side to side along your teeth especially with a medium or hard brush as this destroys the enamal on the tooth. Then at the end place your toothbrush on top of your molars and gently brush along the flat tops of the large teeth. I would say that a lot of your discolouration is due to damaged enamal from incorrect brushing
Its amazing that I was 45 before I found out this?????? Good Luck

  2. It is almost universally recommended by dentists and hygienists that you should always use a soft toothbrush. It will do just as good a job as harder brushes with much less chances of causing damage to the gums and teeth.

  3. They would work just the same as far as cleaning your teeth. The soft bristle toothbrush will help in preventing your gums from bleeding if you have a tendency of brushing to hard. Also, bleeding gums could be a sign of gingivitis. Use some antibacterial mouth wash after you brush and you will notice that your gums will not bleed and the discoloration will go away. It will also help get what (if anything) that your brush missed.
