Does brushing too much cause bad breath?
Posted on August 31, 2010
I'm somewhat OCD when it comes to brushing my teeth. I brush after almost every meal and I eat a lot of small meals throughout the day, so I end up brushing my teeth at least 4-5 times a day. I've noticed lately that my breath smells a little funny and have never had this before. I also noticed that I've been a little more OCD than usual about brushing my teeth lately..... Any connection?

Without knowing anything else, I would say it’s difficult to give you any suggestions. Brushing doesn’t cause bad breath. Pus and bacteria will. An old toothbrush might. If you dont’ scrub your tongue, cheeks and roof of your mouth, you may have bad breath.
Check your toothbrush and tongue. These would probably be the main culprits. If not, check your gums. If you suspect gingivitis, I would go see the dentist to get a cleaning.

Brushing your teeth will help eliminate bacteria in your mouth and actually SHOULD help with odor causing bacteria in your mouth. Maybe you should change your tooth brush and brushing too often is bad because it can wear down the enamel of the teeth. You’re doing more bad than good by doing so. Change your diet or use a tongue cleaner.
