How can I get my friend to brush his teeth, without shoving the toothbrush in his mouth myself?

Does not brushing my teeth for a while and then breathing in his face a good idea?

Find a time where the two of you are alone together without a lot of people around.
Then lay it on him straight.
Just say, "You know dude (or whatever his name is), I’m your friend, but I gotta tell you that your breath really wreaks. When you’re talking, sometimes it’s hard to concentrate on what you’re saying because all I can think about is giving you a breath mint. Are you brushing your teeth? Maybe you should brush more often. If you’re brushing, then you should go see a dentist because you probably have a rotten tooth. You can go to the dental school if you can’t afford it, they’ll give you a discount. Other people feel the same way, and, it’s bad, dude! I wouldn’t say something unless it was foul! You’re my friend and I don’t want to offend you, but I just can’t ignore it anymore. Here’s some mints, and a toothbrush."

- Offer him Chlormints from time to time
- Show him the mirror that cracked when he looked in it
- Put up some posters about dental hygiene
- Set your computers wall-paper to bad-teeth pictures
any number of other wacky things. Another way would be to casually tell him about your visit to the dentist where the Doc scared the living daylights out of you by telling you bad hygiene stories and how you started brushing regularly after that.

I had a similar "situation" with a friend… and one day I just did a double take (a fake one) when I looked at him… asked him if he brushed his teeth lately and since we are pretty upfront with eachother I simply told him that he needs to brush more. Straight forward… honesty… all qualities of a good friend. Good luck.

I would tell him that he has bad breath and that you don’t want to be next to him if he continues to not brush. He may get the hint if he really wants to be next to you. I would set the example by continuing to brush your teeth, not by breathing bad breath in his face.
Also explain to him that it is very important to take good care of his teeth so he has them for a long time. It is not much fun to have dentures. Lack of oral hygiene can lead to tooth decay and tooth loss. Flossing is also very important so a person doesn’t get decay in between the teeth. I once had 12 cavities in between my teeth at one time because I didn’t floss for a long time. It was horrible to get all those fillings.
Also there is the problem of gingivitis. It can cause health problems throughout your body. I have gone through tooth scaling and planing which is not fun and it costs a lot of money.
