How do you avoid getting canker sores?

Posted on July 8, 2010

I am looking for advice from someone who gets canker sores a.k.a. mouth ulcers. How do you avoid getting them? Do you use a certain brand of mouthwash or toothpaste? What seems to cause them for you? How do you treat them?

I don't care if you have sources, I would like to know about your personal experience.

Thanks!

  1. Cankers sores and toothpastes are being linked and you won’t even believe that your toothpaste can cause pain and canker sores. Mostly these are being experienced by individuals with sensitivity or allergies with the common ingredients found in the most toothpaste brands and it is called Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS). The ingredient can also be found in other oral health products such as mouthwashes, its only use is to create foaming. And it has been proven that this ingredient can cause damage to the oral tissues and leads into canker sores as reaction from chemical irritation.

Such there is no cure for canker sores yet they can still be prevented. They are usually caused by poor oral health hygiene, stress and food allergies. Remedies to speed up the healing are available such as oral health care products these products can alleviate the pain and irritation associated with canker sores. Whatever remedy you will use be sure that its safe and effective.

  2. Practice good oral hygiene. Brush your teeth twice daily, and floss daily.

Use toothpaste without sodium laurel sulfate, which has been implicated in aggravating canker sores.

Avoid mouth trauma. Don’t bite the insides of your cheek, and avoid exposing the lining of your mouth to sharp objects, including hard-bristled toothbrushes.

Avoid foods that are believed to trigger attacks. Chocolate, salted nuts and potato chips may contribute to canker sores, though there is currently little authoritative evidence of this.

Finally, from my own personal experience, take lots of vitamin c to avoid getting one.

  3. Avoid toothpastes with sodium lauryl sulphate. you can try Burt’s lavender mint toothpaste. I have used this toothpaste and its good. Its effective against canker sores.
Unfortunately this company stopped production of this toothpaste. But you can find it on amazon.com, so stock as many as you can.

  4. I used to get canker sores all the time. I found toothpaste without Sodium Laurel Sulfate and it has helped wonders. It’s the ingredient that makes the toothpaste sud. I had an allergic reaction to it…and it’s in almost every brand of toothpaste.

I found some sensitive brand at the dollar store that doesn’t have it….but the other brand I found was a certain kind of biotene toothpaste…I think it was the sensitive teeth biotene brand…it’s 8 bucks… but worth it if you can not find the Dollar Tree brand.

  5. God i get those things a lot and they suck. I use this great thing called cankercover. Its kinda expensive, like 15 bucks, and its supposed to heal your sores completely but it doesnt. But it is the only product that Ive ever used that gives you long time relief. Its a little tablet type thing you stick in your mouth over the sore and it stays on for like twelve hours. I love it!
