How do you reach the teeth right at the back of your mouth when brushing?
Posted on July 6, 2010
I keep getting ulcers from brushing my teeth because my toothbrush keeps slipping and hitting the sides of my mouth and gums.
It takes me 15 minutes to brush my teeth because I have to be so careful! And even then, I still can't get the molars right at the back properly - the toothbrush head is too big to fit into the back of the mouth!
Any tips?

First buy a smaller toothbrush. Don’t open wider like the previous answer says. The wider you open the tighter you make the muscle at the back where you are trying to brush. Instead, close your mouth all the way or almost all the way and brush back in the back. This relaxes the muscle allowing you to get further back.

open your mouth wider, and make sure to relax your mouth, so as you feel no tension in your cheeks. The brush should get back there quite easily.

You need to bite down about half way and this allows your toothbrush to slip back there & clean those molars better.

close down to brush the back molars. You have a muscle that tightens and prevents you from reaching there. It is so much easier, you don’t have to see to brush, go by feel. I baby tooth brush which is very small may help also.

In addition to closing your mouth and using a smaller toothbrush… this may sound weird… after you brush as well as you can, take a Q-tip and use it to wipe along your gumline and, especially, around the back teeth. It catches any plaque that you may have missed. Sometimes I can feel just a little area I missed along the gumline at the back and the cotton swab cleans it right up.
