Your best bet is to get a prescription from a dentist for either Aphthasol or Kenalog in Orabase. These medications tend to reduce the inflammation and ulceration that develop when canker sores occur. To get the maximum benefit, you really need to apply the ointment as soon as you think the sores are coming. If you wait until an ulceration is full blown, the healing will be delayed. You’ll find the healing time can be less than a week rather than 10-14 days. (Orabase by itself will only relieve pain and may not promote early healing.)
Canker sores occur because of a lot of reasons (allergies, stress, diet, heredity). You might see if your canker sores are triggered by eating certain foods like peanuts, chocolate, or citrus fruits. Canker sores can be a result of an allergic reaction manifesting in your mouth.
Some people also have said that eating yogurt (containing active Lactobacillus acidophilus cultures) prevents further outbreaks and helps heal sores faster. Some people also say that opening a capsule of Vit E and applying the liquid right on the sore for pain relief.
From a nutritional standpoint, make sure you’re not deficient in folate, iron and vitamin B12. You might want to take a multivitamin tablet in an attempt to reduce future outbreaks.
