eating lemons and tooth erosion?

Posted on May 18, 2011

okay, i love to eat lemons with salt.

i don't do it every day, it's usually just once in a while... like maybe 3 or 4 times a month...
but i also make lemonade once in a while (juice of two lemons, honey, water) and i also LOVE grapefruits

everybody keeps telling me to stop eating these things because i'll lose the enamel on my teeth...
my teeth are a tiny bit transparent on the bottom, but they have ALWAYS been like that, since i got my adult teeth, and i never noticed a significant change in them.
i'm a sour fiend, and i love acidic foods...but is eating lemons just a few times a month REALLY going to destroy my teeth?
is there anything i can do before or after eating them to protect my teeth?
(aside from getting enamel toothpastes)

Brush after eating…views?

Posted on January 1, 2011

This is one of those things that dentists don't seem able to agree on. Can I brush my teeth after eating sugar? I have read this is bad as sugar creates acid and also I am effectively brushing the sugar into my teeth? Likewise, I have read that acidic foods weaken enamel. What I find odd is that toothpaste's like aquafresh claim to "help lock out plaque acid".

If I was to have something alkaline like cheese, milk or drink some mouthwash would I be able to brush straight after?

Why are my gums/mouth suddenly extra sore?

Posted on December 10, 2010

I went to the dentist the other day for a regular cleaning. Turns out I have cavities due to my diet: I eat a lot of acidic foods and it's messing up the pH in my mouth. I got a lot of recommendations from my dentist. Now I'm flossing 1-2 times a day (instead of 1-2 times a week), I'm using baking soda toothpaste, alcohol based mouthwash at morning and night with fluoride, carrying non alcohol mouthwash with me for use during the day after lunch etc, chewing xylitol gum (not Trident, a dentist recommended brand - Spry), and at night putting Mi Paste Plus on my teeth. That last step, the Mi Paste Plus, was given to me by my dentist and is not a toothpaste. It contains extra fluoride and is used as a topical creme on your teeth.

With all these changes my mouth is definitely changing. Unfortunately, it is not comfortable. Lately both my gums and the inside of my lips/mouth feel raw. This feeling is most intense right after brushing (not using the mouthwash - skipped that step this morning because things hurt). It almost feels as though I have cankersores, but when I look in my mouth I don't see anything that looks like a cankersore. Things just look red and feel raw. Thinking about it a little more, I suppose it's mostly the inside of my lips/mouth that hurt, not my gums as much.

I want my mouth to be healthy, with a normal pH level, but I want to find a remedy that doesn't cause this increased soreness either. I'm headed back to the dentist in two weeks to fix those cavities, and I'll ask about it then, but I'm looking for any advice or ideas anyone may have in the meantime.

Thanks!

Whitening remedies for a spot with worn away enamel?

Posted on August 26, 2010

I have this little spot on my tooth that is yellowish. I asked my dentist and she said it was a spot where some enamel has worn away. It's not a surprise. I eat lots of acidic foods and drink tons of tea. I'm looking for a home remedy to whiten my teeth because I can't get my teeth bleached that's way to expensive.

What should I eat to prevent mouth ulcers/ gingivitis (ie diet for a healthy mouth)?

Posted on July 17, 2010

I have almost chronic mouth ulcers, and gingivitis, I brush my teeth, and have started taking Lysine. I don't know what else to do. I think a change in diet would work, but I was hoping someone would know what would work best. I know to avoid sugars, and acidic foods. I need help, please!

I have poor tooth enamel?

Posted on July 16, 2010

I have been to the dentist twice a year for 4 years now (sometimes more than twice actually). They have told me that I should stay away from any acidic foods or drinks (which include juice and soda as well as fruits).

They said If I am to eat anything acidic, I need to immediatly brush my teeth to prevent cavaties. Now keep in mind, I brush 2-3 times a day and floss but I somehow just have naturally weak tooth enamel.

My question is, is there anything I can do to naturally strengthen my enamel? I want to stay away from all products with flouride if possible, but I am all for any odd-ball vitamin or mineral remedy.

Thanks!
