Dr. Sharma appears on Steven and Chris (season 4, episode 45) – “Hidden” fat

Posted on June 18, 2011

In this segment from CBC's Steven and Chris (season 4, episode 45), Dr. Sharma discusses the dangers of "hidden" fat that is located inside the body. This layer of fat is referred to as visceral fat, and while not visible, can be found in people who wouldn't typically be seen as at risk for being overweight. This is different from subcutaneous fat (the visible layer that we all strive to lose). Visceral fat is associated with several serious health risks including colon and breast cancer, high blood pressure and diabetes. While most weight loss regimens focus on the outer layer of subcutaneous fat, Dr. Sharma highlights the importance and negative health effects of excess visceral fat. This segment includes a series of exercise and diet tips that will help cut down on visceral fat and at the same time eliminate the subcutaneous "beer belly". This segment also gives some insight into cryolipolysis, a new non-invasive procedure that targets visceral fat. Dr. Sharma also highlights the difference between proteins, calories and carbohydrates before answering some questions from the viewing audience.
