How to keep gingivitis bacteria low with major tooth decay, during pregnancy to avoid preterm labor?

Posted on January 18, 2011

Gingivitis, tooth decay, gum disease, the bacterias from these diseases/ conditions are known for causing pre-term labor and low birth weight babies. I want my child to be healthy, I also want to stop the pain in my mouth/ teeth. I dont have dental insurance, but I will be going to the dentist within 1 month to get some help. I was wondering if anyone could tell me how to keep these bacterias at bay, so that they do not cause harm to my unborn child? I can not floss, due to tooth decay near the gums of my teeth, the floss just gets stuck and I have a hard time getting it back out, there is no way for me to floss with dental floss. I have tried to use the water pic to floss, this used to work, but I have a couple exposed nerves and it hurts so bad when the water pic sends water hitting into the nerve. I have covered most of the exposed nerves with temorin, over the counter temporary cavity filler. I think I will try to use the water pic again now that the nerves are not so exposed. Other than this what can keep these bacterias from going crazy and causing more harm? Gargling salt water? Listerine? Brushing 2 times a day. What else can I do? Thanks in advance, best wishes to you all, and God bless you.

Root Canal/ Oral hygiene questions!?

Posted on November 21, 2010

Root canal questions:
Do you have to get a temporary root canal before getting the real one?
If the dentist recommends a temporary one, should I refuse?
What color is the crown of the root canal?
How long does the root canal treatment procedure take---can you do it in one sitting?

Oral Hygiene questions:
Which is more effective: dental floss or interdental brush?
My gums bleed when I use the interdental brush but not when I use dental floss---does this simply mean that the interdental brush is too big, or is the interdental brush just in the process of removing plaque?

Bonus Question:
How do you take care of a tooth that has filling in it?

I know I'm asking a lot...but I really need to learn how to take care of my teeth properly because I developed 9 cavities in one year....
thanks!

I used an at-home metal dental scaler – did I scratch my teeth?

Posted on September 19, 2010

I recently purchased an at-home-use metal dental scaler and dental pick to clean my teeth with. I have good teeth with no fillings but I am scared of going to the dentist (I am in my 30s). I used the little mirror to help me clean off what looked like some tartar between my teeth, and found my teeth looked better afterwards.

However, several weeks later I started seeing some little black marks between my teeth where I had used the scaler on them - it looks like someone has taken a graphite pencil and shaded in the sides of my teeth by the gum line. These marks clean off quite easily if I use dental floss... but return the next day. They get darker the longer I leave them.

I am worried that I somehow scratched my teeth using the dental scaler, and now some kind of dark plaque is building up in the scratch marks. I did not press very hard but I am sure the marks are related to my use of the scaler.

My question is, if I have indeed scratched my teeth, will they heal eventually, or do I need to go get my teeth professionally cleaned and possibly buffed at the dentist to fix the marks? Or have I perminantly damaged my teeth? Any feedback would be very gratefully appreciated!

Odor between a bridge and gum line?

Posted on September 15, 2010

I have a three-tooth bridge (11, 12 and 13) and I've noticed for a few weeks now that there's a terrible odor coming from it. My breath is okay, but when I floss around the bridge, the floss threader, dental floss and my fingers smell like it. I've tried using two types of Listerine, peroxide, and even using my fluoride gel (that I brush on my real teeth) on it, and nothing works. What could this be? There's no irritation or pain--just the smell. I've had this bridge for about 6 months, it cost me ,200 out of pocket, and I REALLY don't want to be told I need a new one. What are some common causes of odor like this? It smells horrible.
Forgot to add that 11 was a healthy tooth, 12 (obviously) was missing, and 13 was a root canal, if this makes a difference.

How to floss teeth without getting it all over the mirror?

Posted on September 11, 2010

I floss while looking in the mirror, and no matter how I do it, I always get bits of food and gunk all over the mirror. Does this happen to you? Am I doing something wrong? Also, I hate handling the stinky stuff with my fingers. Is that avoidable while using dental floss?
Won't I get bits of food all over the place (ie. on the floor, on the table, on people) regardless of where I stand?

What is going on with my gums/teeth?

Posted on September 10, 2010

Just a few months ago, I noticed that my bottom, front, right tooth was losing the gum that surrounded it. It started building up plaque and I had to start brushing my teeth 3 times a day. Now, the spot that the gum was supporting the tooth, is exposing the tooth and now I see a black spot at the bottom of the tooth. Its so bad that im pretty sure that the bottom of the tooth is less than a centimeter away from the gum. I can take dental floss and literally go under the tooth. Please help me. This is the first thing I find on my teeth. I've never had a cavity or anything and im worried. Does anyone know what this may be?
Thanks guys. I really wasnt going because I have no insurance. But im definately goig to look around a.s.a.p.

How do you get dental floss out of your teeth?

My dental floss rips and shreds and then I am more uncomfortable as I then have food and dental floss stuck inthat small space. What won't shred and get rid of this uneasy feeling.
