How can I prevent my teeth from eroding?

Posted on July 24, 2011

I have an eating disorder. I've been purging several times a week for about six years now. Yes, I know how incredibly dangerous that is. But sorry, you won't be able to change that with a lecture, so can we please skip that? I appreciate your concern, but it won't change anything.

Anyway. I want to minimize the effects all that purging will have on my teeth (I know I can't totally prevent damage, but I want to do as little damage as possible).

For the past few years, my routine is to take a Tums tablet to neutralize the stomach acid, wait about 10 minutes, then purge. Afterwards I rinse with hydrogen peroxide and then with water. (I know not to brush my teeth immediately after purging, because I've heard doing that only makes the erosion worse).

Is this a good routine? Should I brush my teeth before I purge? Should I rinse with hydrogen peroxide before purging? Should I continue rinsing with peroxide afterwards, or is that bad?

Any tips you can give me to prevent as much erosion as possible? Thanks so much.
@Lax19: actually, if you brush your teeth after purging, it's really bad for your teeth (you're basically brushing stomach acid into the enamel).

@ Norwegian Hammer: Superficial? Gee, thanks. That's definitely why I asked the question, to get called superficial... you don't know me, so please close your mouth. I would love to stop purging. I've tried, and I can't. I'm sure in the future I'll be able to stop (I used to cut, too, but I stopped doing that) but in the meantime, I would like to keep my teeth from rotting out. Sorry if you have a problem with that.

@Mommy several times over: appreciate your advice, but I'm perfectly aware of that. I know the erosion won't stop. That's not what I asked. I asked how to MINIMIZE the damage. I really just want a straight answer, not a song that I've heard played over and over.

It would be really fantastic if someone would actually answer the question.

Can a college counseling center help a person with an eating disorder?

Posted on July 14, 2011

I've had an eating disorder for a while now. I've finally admitted this along with some other emotional issues I have to one person who is really close to me. They suggested I seek counseling through my college. By the way, I go to a big university with a large health/counseling center.

Cost for fixing enamel erosion caused by bulimia?

Posted on July 10, 2011

a little worried here... =/

my teeth aren't super bad, but have started to yellow badly and the ends are turning clear as well. I know, you have to treat the eating disorder before you fix the teeth, but that's not my question. How much will it COST??

Tired? Dizzy? Canker sores? Fever? Neck Pains? What is my condition!?

Posted on April 30, 2011

for the past two days I have had HORRIBLE back neck pains, fevers, headaches (horrible), been really tired, dizzy whenever I stand, and a canker sore that is really irritating.

I have seriously considering Oral Herpes (i had oral sex last week) except I only have on canker sore and the area around my mouth isn't irritated and I don't have a lot of canker sores. Nothing inside my mouth is bleeding or inflamed either.

I also read it could be from nutrition and it may be. I have a slight eating disorder. I also heard it could be from allergies. I have HORRIBLE allergies and have stopped talking allergy shots because of time and money issues. I also haven't religiously been taking my allergy medicine.

Could it also just be a cold? I don't even know. Does anyone know anyways to cure my symptoms? Please help, thank you.

Three things I believe are helpful to understand for people who are newly diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes....or even for those who have lived with diabetes for several years.

Bulimia and dental hygiene: I need help!!?

Posted on February 22, 2011

Okay, I am going to tell you all my full story.

I was bulimic for about 8 months or so. I was normal weight, but I thought I was fat, so I turned to eating disorders. I was anorexic for the beginning few of those months, too. Because I was already small, I only lost about 15 pounds, but I was so proud. But I've been eating better and I haven't been vomiting for about a month and a half now. Yay!!! :) however, I did gain back all of the weight, but I don't really care, because this happened:

I skipped out on dentists appointments for about 2 years before I went to the dentist again about a month ago. At that appointment, he told me that I had 4 cavities! And I had never had a cavity before, so I knew it was because my enamel had softened. He told my mom that the erosion was due to some type of acid (which I know is stomach acid), so he didn't find out about the bulimia. My back molar is also chipped because the enamel softened so much. I have to get root canal and a crown on the chipped tooth, and I have to get all of the cavities filled, all together costing around 00 because of my bulimia. Totally not worth it! Now I'm going to a specialist who is going to give the root canal. Now, here are my questions.

- what do I do if my dentist/specialist asks if I have an eating disorder? I do NOT NOT NOT want to tell either of them, so what could I say that would be another probable cause for the cavities and tooth decay?
- I've been disorder free for a while now, but how long does it take for my body to start recovering and going back to norma,?

Will the dentist tell your parents if he's noticed some acid erosion?

Posted on January 15, 2011

I'm currently in the midst of struggling with an eating disorder, and I've been purging quite a bit often. I'm trying to get help on my own. I've spoken to my therapist about this and everything. So I'm worried that if the dentist does find anything wrong with my teeth, that he'll tell my parents. I'm 16, so I don't know if I have any rights to withheld that information from my parents.
