How do you avoid getting canker sores?

I am looking for advice from someone who gets canker sores a.k.a. mouth ulcers. How do you avoid getting them? Do you use a certain brand of mouthwash or toothpaste? What seems to cause them for you? How do you treat them?
I don't care if you have sources, I would like to know about your personal experience.
