Question about gum disease?

Posted on September 10, 2010

I am 33 years old, and I think I'm losing my teeth.

I brush, floss, and use mouthwash twice a day, every day, religiously, yet my gums look very bad. They are extremely receded and now I am feeling like my teeth are "shifting." I don't understand what's going on. How can someone who is so persistant about good oral health have this problem? Could this be hereditary? I know my family has a lot of tooth issues. My concern is that I don't want to have my teeth pulled. I think I'm way too young for that.

Here's my main question: Are my teeth salvagable even though they are feeling like they are getting loose or shifting? I know implants are outrageously expensive and I don't want teeth I can remove (aka dentures). Any info on teeth and gum issues here would be helpful. Thanks

Do medium bristle toothbrushes clean/disinfect as well as hard bristle toothbrushes do?

Posted on September 10, 2010

I was wondering because I normally use hard bristled toothbrushes but I would brush my teeth too vigorously and my gums would bleed a little. Yesterday, I went to the store and got some Colgate Medium-Bristle toothbrushes and I used them today. After I used them today, my teeth felt clean but I have very bad discolorations on my teeth and I want to be sure that a medium will work as well as a hard brush. Or would my dental hygiene habits matter more than what strength toothbrush I use? Thank you so much for your input!!!

Is it normal to bleed while flossing? ?

Each time I floss between my teeth, I notice a small amount of blood (between a few teeth only). Does it mean I should check my gums for some sort of disease? Thanks.

What is tooth enamel?

Posted on September 10, 2010

I've never understood what tooth enamel is. Is it the whole of the tooth that we can see. i.e. not the part dug in to the gums, or is on the outside of the part we can see, like some sort of coating. Can someone please end this confusion I have with tooth enamel. Also, my teeth look sort of see-through, I assume this is damaged tooth enamel?

What's wrong with my bottom teeth? (picture)?

Posted on September 9, 2010

I couldn't really get a good picture, but my bottom teeth have been this way for some months now. It looks very similar to plaque at the bottom but I can brush and scrape as much as I want and nothing will come off, it's pretty hard. Is it my gums receding or something?

Why does putting pressure on my gums feel good?

Posted on September 9, 2010

Occasionally, when I'm brushing my teeth, I find that it feels good to bite down on my toothbrush to put pressure on and between my gums. When this happens, it also feels good if i use my finger to push against them. Its only on the left, top side of my mouth. What's the deal?
Also, the morning after this happens and I brush my teeth again, that spot is really sore. I'm guess that's from all the pressure that was applied the previous night, though.
