No insurance, have health problems, need specialty visits… what should I do?

Posted on September 14, 2011

3 wks ago I started getting mentrual-like cramps that was targeted mainly on my left side. After about 2 wks of that I went to the Health Center at the college I go to and saw a Physician. She did a pelvic exam and I had some blood work done. Now after 2 1/2 wks of cramping the pain turned into general pelvic pain, the pain doesn't feel like cramping anymore... it's worse! So I went back to the Health Center she says that all the tests she did on me came out normal and so she doesn't know what else she can do for me but suggest that I go to a Gynecologist. My problem is that I don't have any health insurance, the only thing I have is Family Pact & it might cover another pelvic exam by the Gyn but nothing else. I might have to have an ultrasound done & would have to pay that cash. So far the cheapest Gyn I've been able to find is 0 for consult (might not have to pay that b/c I have Family Pact) & 0 for an ultrasound. Should I just apply for health insurance now (4/mo + cpay)
or should I just try to find the cheapest way out of this? What I'm worried about is that I might have something serious and go through surgery or something and I'm sure surgery procedures won't be too cheap if I'm paying cash. Also, what if I need medication...
Also I heard that if I get insurance after seeing someone for this, if my insurance finds out then the insurance would charge me for it. Is that true?

Small lump at the bottom of the breast near the center of the chest, and no health insurance!?

Posted on August 17, 2011

My girlfriend noticed earlier tonight that there was a small lump at the bottom of her breast near the center of the chest. When touching it she says it hurts, but says that would normally happen when pushing on the chest. She is 22 and says she is very close to being on her period. We don't have any health insurance and she is scared to death, saying she is going to die because she can't afford any treatments if it is cancer. Is there any free or extremely low cost treatments or screenings that she can go to? We are located in Southern New Jersey (Gloucester County). Any other info would be great also.

Thanks

Can I just get ER health insurance?

Posted on August 5, 2011

I will be attending college as a grad student later this month. There is a student health center on campus that could take care of any non-emergency office visit and prescription needs. What they don't cover is any emergency related problems...

Is there health insurance specifically for ER related issues such as in the event I break a leg or am seriously sick outside of campus health center hours?

I live in Los Angeles, CA

Thanks for your advice!

What's the crime when a parent falsely commits a child to a mental health facility for ulterior motives?

Posted on July 17, 2011

Mental Health Centers will often accept minors if their custodial parent commits them and has health insurance to pay for their institutionalization. But when the parent is not qualified to make such determination as to the true mental health of the child, what crime has the parent commit for orchestrating a false institutionalization?

Can the mental health facility be held liable for accepting a healthy minor and forcing them into treatment and medication when the minor has no mental illness or psychosis and does not need treatment or medication?

What is the body of law that governs patient rights of minors in this situation?
The parent won't specify what they believe is wrong outside of claiming the child is having anxiety attacks, yet there is nothing in the child's behavior or words that would indicate an anxiety attack. The mother talks over and ignores the child, and when the child gets upset for being treated this way, the mother says it is the child's fault and they are having an anxiety attack. The child now feels as though they cannot express any emotion whatsoever for fear the mother will label it disfunctional or suspect, and the mother doesn't even have a college degree and no training in mental health diagnosis or therapy. At worst, the child may need to learn to be more patient and not jump to conclusions, but after years of being trampled over and ignored, one can understand their trained frustration.

I am 21, with no job no insurance no $. My wisdom teeth need to be removed. Are health centers the best option?

Posted on July 7, 2011

I am 21 years old without a job or health insurance. My wisdom teeth are coming in and will need to be soon removed. Are "health centers" the answer for me even if I have no income coming in with no money at all. What are my options?

Can college health services give out prescriptions?

Posted on June 23, 2011

I would like to get a prescription for anti-depressants without my parents knowing. I am 19, so the doctor is not obligated to tell them, but I am under their medical insurance, which reports all the prescriptions of all the family members each month. However, I know my college health center operates independently of the health insurance company, so the prescription would never show up. I'm just not certain whether or not they can write prescriptions. Can they?
