How can I prevent my teeth from eroding?

Posted on July 24, 2011

I have an eating disorder. I've been purging several times a week for about six years now. Yes, I know how incredibly dangerous that is. But sorry, you won't be able to change that with a lecture, so can we please skip that? I appreciate your concern, but it won't change anything.

Anyway. I want to minimize the effects all that purging will have on my teeth (I know I can't totally prevent damage, but I want to do as little damage as possible).

For the past few years, my routine is to take a Tums tablet to neutralize the stomach acid, wait about 10 minutes, then purge. Afterwards I rinse with hydrogen peroxide and then with water. (I know not to brush my teeth immediately after purging, because I've heard doing that only makes the erosion worse).

Is this a good routine? Should I brush my teeth before I purge? Should I rinse with hydrogen peroxide before purging? Should I continue rinsing with peroxide afterwards, or is that bad?

Any tips you can give me to prevent as much erosion as possible? Thanks so much.
@Lax19: actually, if you brush your teeth after purging, it's really bad for your teeth (you're basically brushing stomach acid into the enamel).

@ Norwegian Hammer: Superficial? Gee, thanks. That's definitely why I asked the question, to get called superficial... you don't know me, so please close your mouth. I would love to stop purging. I've tried, and I can't. I'm sure in the future I'll be able to stop (I used to cut, too, but I stopped doing that) but in the meantime, I would like to keep my teeth from rotting out. Sorry if you have a problem with that.

@Mommy several times over: appreciate your advice, but I'm perfectly aware of that. I know the erosion won't stop. That's not what I asked. I asked how to MINIMIZE the damage. I really just want a straight answer, not a song that I've heard played over and over.

It would be really fantastic if someone would actually answer the question.

Is it ok to bring up reoccurring canker sores to my doctor?

Posted on May 7, 2011

I am a 19 year old college female. I have reoccurring canker sores in my mouth. I usually break out with canker sores at least twice a month. I have had canker sores since a little kid. But as a kid i would get a few break outs a year. Now breakouts seem to be more common and often. I already don't eat tomatoes, orange juice or pineapple, for i know these definitely bring on sores. Is it reasonable to bring this up to my doctor when i go home for break? Is it possible because they are recurrent there can be a topical medicine i put on the sore i get prescribed by the doctor to me? I have already tried hydrogen peroxide and Kank-a and Orajel, non of them working...Oh yeah i forgot...2 years ago my cheek swelled up and i went to the urgent care and was prescribed Lidocaine Hydrochloride to put on it to stop the swelling. But until it was out-dated it worked to get rid of canker sores faster. I do notice stress is a factor of canker sores, but i get 9 hours of sleep a night and work out to try to manage stress.

CANKER SORES!!! HELP!?

Posted on April 26, 2011

Ever since I was little I get painful canker sores. What helps them to heal? They are usually so bad that I can't eat or talk without it being painful. I have a particularly painful one right now that is splitting my head in half. I have used salt water and hydrogen peroxide...even numbed it..but it only relieves me for 30 minutes or so. It's in the side of my cheek. I get them everytime I'm stressed, or bite & burn my mouth.

HELP :(

BTW this is how they look::

Canker Sores Help Please!?

Posted on April 14, 2011

I have a canker sore, that annoying blister on your tongue that's border by this reddish color, with white inside. It hurts tremendously, and I have them at least six or seven times a year. They last about one week, but the pain they cause is simply insane. Being a thirteen year old with little pain threshold, is there any way I can mute the incessant throbbing of my canker sore or can I flag the pain in any way?

Responses involving hydrogen peroxide, milk of magnesium, or anything else you wouldn't find in the average medicine cabinet don't help. I've looked everywhere, but they all say "It'll go away..." I know that, but is there a permanent solution to my recurrent predicament?

By the way, is it possible I have a vitamin B-12, iron, or zinc deficiency? My mother says the cause of my canker sores is because I don't drink enough water, so currently I am gulping down gallons of the stuff right now, but it's not giving any relief whatsoever.

Please, I am in dire need for a resolution to this nagging, irritating issue.

For those who answer, thanks enormously. These canker sores take a major toll on my felicity.
