What happened to my tooth?

Posted on February 23, 2011

For background, I'm a twenty-four-year-old female with excellent dental hygiene. I always brush and floss, and have never had a cavity or gum problems in my life. I am one of those people who just have any dental problems. No plaque, no bad breath, no gum issues, no sensitivity...I've been using a Reach flosser and various sonic toothbrushes for years, and I've never used any whitening products ever because I'm worried that I'll hurt my teeth.

I've been using the same toothpaste (Crest Complete, day and night versions) and then rinsing with ACT fluoride mouthwash for years, and I wasn't consuming anything weird or acidic or otherwise bad or taking any medications. I eat a good diet, I take vitamins, and I wasn't making out with anybody who could have given me mouth herpes or something.

About a month ago, I started getting sensitivity in the upper right quadrant of my mouth and thought that I'd finally gotten a cavity, but it went away the next day and I had intermittent pain for about a week. Then one day I woke up and my mouth hurt so bad that I almost couldn't stand it, but I was broke, so I didn't go to the dentist.

One of my molars on that side -- second to the back -- was sticking out ridiculously far as if it was significantly longer than any of my other teeth and if anything touched it (including my tongue), it would hurt so bad. When I tried to floss in between that tooth and the back tooth, it took ALL of my strength to push the floss through as if that tooth and the very back tooth had suddenly become too close together. This happened literally overnight, and by the end of that day, the cheek side of my gum started hurting. I developed a sore along the top of the gum on that side that went from the back of my mouth to my incisors in about a week. It felt like an extra flap of skin and then turned into what I can only describe as a long, rectangular blister.

It hurt SO much. Seriously. It hurt worse than when I had pancreatitis last year.

The only thing I did was I kept brushing and flossing and started using G.U.M Rincinol. A week later, these blister like sores started peeling off my gum, leaving raw gums behind that healed normally. The sensitivity continued and the tooth was still jutting out too far, but now, everything is fine. It's like none of this ever happened and there's no pain, no sensitivity, no problems flossing, and my tooth is back to it's normal place.

I've googled and I didn't find anything that really sounded like what I went through.

I don't have a lot of money, so going to the dentist is something I only want to do if I'm totally screwed. The pain is gone, I have no symptoms, but I would feel so much better if I just understood what happened and if it's a sign that something else is happening that I need to get medical attention for.

Please don't respond with 'go to a dentist' as I am avoiding doing that because I'm busted for money right now and if I could afford to do that, I wouldn't be asking here.

Thank you for your time. Any advice is appreciated. :)
Update: Thank you to the first responder.

I'd like to add that I'm using Crest Pro-Health not Crest Complete. I have no idea why I typed that.

Also, I'm twenty-four as I said and according to dental x-rays I've had in the past, I have wisdom teeth, but they haven't actually made an appearance yet. I'm not sure if wisdom teeth could cause the sores in my mouth though.

CAN WE TALK MUCH ABOUT TEETH & VENEERS PLEASE?

Posted on December 31, 2010

If you have veneers I'd like you to tell me about your experience & how pleased you were with the result...the following list is just my range of questioning thoughts like...

Are they porcelain or another material & can people tell that you've got them?
How did you go about deciding what tone would be right?
Did you feel a sense of loss at having your natural pearlys filed away or were your teeth really bad before?
Are the veneers much bigger than your originals & can you feel them taking up more room in your mouth?
Did eating food change i.e do you bite differently & is there anything you avoid?
How many teeth did you have replaced & what was the cost. I understand they need to be replaced apx every 7/10yrs is this because they fall out or do they wear away?
& last but not least are/were you amazed with the difference it made to your smile, do you find yourself doing it more :D & has it boosted your self asteem/confidence as a result?

My teeth could have been naturally perfect, I've still got no fillings but it seems to me they've suffered from allot of erosion & my incisors aren't straight because silly arse didn't want the free brace when they were younger cos it wasn't a cool thing but now I regret it.

But I wonder if I should just have them straightened & concentrate on trying to recondition them because I'm hearing more & more about their natural ability to re-mineralise/enamel when not coated in glycerin contained in toothpaste & diet is right & certain conditions allow them to do so.
Shann that really is disgusting.

Think I might stick with what I've got, I was in 2 minds anyway but that's really put me off lol

Sudden case of gingivitis?

Posted on December 4, 2010

On monday or tuesday this week, my gumline around my top, front right incisors and canine teeth had developed a gingivitis-like condition. Also, behind the teeth, i noticed today that the gum is swollen and blackish in appearance. Today i also had a 101.7* fever and general malaise, went to the doctor, and she said that i may have caught an enterovirus.

so what's going on with my gums???

Any Dentists out there? I need serious help?

Help me please.

I am 13 and my top braces require me to clean my teeth 3 times aday. At best i do twice aday, in the morning and the evening, along with cleaning my lower teeth normally. I used a disclosian tablet last night to see if i had plaque and i did on an incisor and i cleaned and clean the tooth and gum, as well as flossing for about 10-20 minutes, rincing with mouth wash many times. Now the bottom of my front 4 incisors on the bottom mouth, the gums undrneath are red and it dosent hurt just looks odd. Please dont try and scare me please just tell me what i should do.

Thanks

On teeth brushing… help!?

Posted on September 27, 2010

Hello, I have always brushed my teeth daily, and using 'intuition' when regarding how to brush.
My question is, What is the most efficient way to brush? (i.e. faster, removes plaque better) And how much toothpaste should I be using as an adult?
I know that physically speaking, a tooth has 3 surfaces : the front, back and the part you chew on. For the incisors, there are actually only two: the front/back. I realized that I have been brushing the edges of the incisors as much as that of molars.
Please help if you have any tips, methods, OR a link to some helpful information...
Thanks in advance!

Do I have gingivitis ? Or is it my wisdom teeth?

Posted on September 18, 2010

Ok its been confirmed that all 4 of my wisdom teeth are coming in DIAGONALLY into my molers next to them. Since I'm 16 I know it will happen soon. But lately once and awhile every 2 to 3 weeks my molers are partially aching. Also my top incisors have shifted and once and a while if I push them in they hurt. So what is it are all teeth even incisors effected by the growth of the wisdom teeth?

What would cause gum pain while brushing?

Posted on August 27, 2010

There is one spot (right in-between two of my incisors) that gives me a very sharp pain when a toothbrush bristle pokes it. I figured it was just a minor infection, that would go away, but it's been like that for almost a year now, so now I don't know what it is. Yeah, I know I need to go to the dentist (my yearly check-up is next month), but for now I was just wondering what some of you might think it is. I can't see it, either because the spot is behind my teeth. And, it will sometimes bleed if I hit it real good. So...
1) is this normal?
2) what could be the cause?
3) is mouth cancer a possibility? lol

Also, I brush twice a day and use a "whitening" pre-rinse mouthwash with alcohol and peroxide, and a fluoride mouthwash after brushing.

brittle tooth at gumline! cavity? help?

Posted on July 24, 2010

i was using a toothpick bc i thought i had something in my tooth. and now it feels like there is a gap between where i used the toothpick. i look in the mirror and notice around the base (close to gumline) of my bottom two incisors that it appears very white like there is plaque on it but there isnt. it feels bery brittle, if i pick at it im afraid it will break off. is this a cavity? it does not hurt it just feels verrrry brittle and rough edged, and whiter around the base near gumline. please help!
no i do not think its plaque build up, its my actual tooth that has discolored to a very white color, and it appears to be cracking.

for the jack@ss comment, i was simply asking a question, yes that requires help in getting an answer, i didnt ask for smart remarks or else i would have written smart remarks anyone?

geez. be nice.
thanks for the suggestions both of you. but you both are wrong.

a piece of my tooth DID fall off shortly after flossing once again a couple days later. it IS infact my ACTUAL TOOTH.

great...now i have to spend more money at the dentist!

Have I chipped my tooth? Or could it be plaque?

Posted on July 7, 2010

A couple of days ago I was running my tongue around my mouth and I suddenly noticed what seemed to be a small hole in one of my top incisors near the gumline. I have had plaque problems with this particular tooth before. I didnt feel anything come away nor did I hear a crunch or anything when eating. I have a dentist appointment Tomorrow for a clean and am hoping its just plaque that has chipped off! I dont have any pain or discomfort. Is this possible?
