Gum disease is an inflammation of the gums that can progress to affect the bone that surrounds and supports your teeth. As the disease progresses, the pockets deepen and more gum tissue and bone are destroyed. When this happens, teeth are no longer anchored in place, they become loose and tooth loss occurs. Gum disease, in fact, is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults and accounts for 75% of adult tooth loss in the United States. If you have been referred to a periodontist it is very likely that your condition has progressed beyond the mild stage. Our goal is to do what it takes to help you and your general dentist do what it takes to avoid tooth loss.
