What are the chances of getting gestational diabetes?

Posted on July 26, 2011

Hi Everyone,
Im about to start trying for a second child and have some concerns about diabetes. I had gestational diabetes with my first child and was insulin dependent for the last 8 weeks of my pregnancy. I was wondering if anyone knew the chances of getting it the 2nd time around? Also, I've been hearing about women who had gestational diabetes for 2 consecutive pregnancies and then ended up keeping diabetes for their lifetime. Does anyone know any information on this as well?

Gum irritation from Canker sores?

Posted on April 8, 2011

Ok, background: a week ago I had a flu like symptoms- fever, body aches, sore throat bla bla bla. Fever went away after 24hrs along with body aches, sore throat did not. Dr said no strep, just a severe sore throat.(started warm salt water 3+ times a day as soon as sore throat presented itself.)
The next day I see/feel a canker sore starting to build, then by the end of the day I see 4. By morning I see multiple on my tongue and inner mouth starting to build up ( I have never had more than one at a time in my lifetime- i'm 41) About the this time, my gums around my teeth ( which I have no issues) start to get real sore, including the roof of my mouth is tender/swollen too. The next morning, I have multiple full blown canker sores, my gums hurt when I brush my teeth so much that it was almost impossible to brush. I am still doing the warm salt water, and have added hydrogen peroxide to my routine. It's been almost a week, some of the canker sores are starting to disapate, some are not, and the gums although better are still sore to brush. A few questions:
- Is it common for the gums and roof of the mouth to get that tender from canker sores?
- why would the gums get inflamed from canker sores that are on the tongue, inner lip, and cheek?
- will to much hydrogen peroxide rinsing cause this gum irritation? ( I know it's a stretch...)
- Once the canker sores are gone, will the gumm irritation go away too?

I appreciate anyone's input, especially if this has happened to you.
And yes, I know I should go to my dentist, but I'm on the road working til Christmas. So if that is your answer, thanks, but I understand that..... thank you all again.

So I need to know if gingivitis and or periodontal treatments hurt?

Posted on January 19, 2011

So for any one who has had or has gingivitis or periodontal disease... I have either the beginning stage of the gingivitis or it has gone into periodontal issues. I have done a turn of research on it and I have an appointment for Monday I am super nervous and scared about it.

For those that have had it or has it could you please tell me when they used the tool to measure the pockets to see how severe it is does it hurt? and when they do the scaling or any of the treatments how bad it hurt? I have only had one cavity filled in my lifetime and that was painful for me, so how does this compare?

Back pain?

Posted on December 19, 2010

I'm 24 years old and I was having some minor back pain off and on for the past few years, mostly mid back, sometimes lower back, depending on whatever activity it was that I was doing. I saw a chiropractor for an adjustment. She took x-rays and found that my hips and tailbone were slightly rotated outward, probably caused by a past injury and a lifetime of poor posture. She thinks this and a weak muscle balance in my back were the root of the back pain.

I've seen her twice a week for a couple of months now, where she uses a "micro adjuster" to push my tailbone back into place. I've also done daily exercises, stretching and used back support for driving. But my back is actually beginning to hurt worse now! The pain is almost daily. She thinks that since the lower back is straightening out to where it should be, its pulling the rest of the back back in line, something like that. And that the pain is normal and should recede as everything lines up and I get used to it. Sound right?
The pain usually starts the exact second I start to slouch forward while sitting. I try to sit upright, but its hard to being in front of a desk for a good portion of the day.

Do I really need a root canal?

Posted on August 6, 2010

I have been having some pretty bad pain between my last two molars on the upper right side of my mouth; it's been bothersome for the past few weeks. It hurts to chew food on that side, and it hurts so bad to floss between those two teeth that I can barely get the floss half way between the molars before I have to stop. I also have this weird metallic taste in my mouth. I went to the dentist today, and he said that my tooth is dying or already dead, and that I would need to see an endodontist to get a root canal. I have always taken very good care of my teeth; I brush twice a day, floss everyday, and use a fluoride rinse everyday. I've never had an issue with tooth decay, and I've only had about six cavities in my lifetime. I'm 22, and very healthy; so I'm just wondering, is this normal for someone to have a tooth die so suddenly? Especially since I take very good care of my teeth? The dentist also stated that this kind of thing happens as a result of trauma to the tooth or decay; and I have not had any trauma at all (not even an accidental bump), and I definitely do not have tooth decay. The only sort of trauma I could really even think of would be that I had my wisdom teeth removed about a year and a half ago. Would this have anything to do with it? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

Will a clear retainer work as a tooth whitening tray?

Posted on July 16, 2010

I recently got my braces off, and I received a clear retainer to keep my teeth straight. Because of the braces, my teeth are also quite yellow, and I've been looking for a treatment. I read online the hydrogen peroxide and baking soda works well, but I want to use it in a tray. Would my retainer work? It's expensive and I need to make it last my lifetime, so I want to make sure it won't warp/discolor the tray.

Lemon juice and tooth enamel?

Posted on July 15, 2010

I'm sentenced to a lifetime of drinking tons of water. Ok, maybe not tons but at least 2-4 quarts per day. Because water is so boring I've been using the Crystal Lite to go sticks to add a hint of flavor. But eventually I'll get tired of those too - and paying for them, so I thought about adding a little bit of lemon juice to the water instead. I'm thinking I'd probably add the juice I can squeeze by hand out of 1/2 of a lemon to about a quart of water.

But I'm concerned about the effect on my teeth. I have braces (if that matters), I'm 41 and my teeth are sensitive. I'm using Pronamel by Sensodyne toothpaste.

If I do this, it would be twice per day 5 days a week. But not every single week - I'll vary that with using the CL sticks and perhaps also plain water.

Will that much lemon juice be detrimental to my teeth?
