According to latest research, what are the principle contributing causes to late onset diabetes?

Posted on August 19, 2011

Some fruits are higher than others on the glycemic index. Is it possible that fruit eaten in any quantity could become a cause of diabetes? I had always thought that the enemy was sucrose, not fructose consumed in raw, fresh fruit.

Have read that overweight can be a contributing factor. If one remains consistently slighly under-weight can such an individual develop diabetes?

If the reader happens to be an expert in the matter, why not list for me up-to-date guidelines for the avoidance of this problem?

Has anyone thats been diagnosed with diabetes have headaches after eating as a symptom?

Posted on July 27, 2011

I am 23 years old, overweight, and recently began having headaches after I eat. It's not every time I eat, and it's no specific food or amount of food that triggers the headaches. I usually get one every other day or so. Ibuprofen doesn't help, but they aren't migranes. I am worried about a possibility of diabetes. My left foot/calf also gets tingly and swollen after sitting for a while. Ideas? I know I should obviously go to the doctor, but I can't afford it right now.

Dr. Sharma appears on Steven and Chris (season 4, episode 45) – “Hidden” fat

Posted on June 18, 2011

In this segment from CBC's Steven and Chris (season 4, episode 45), Dr. Sharma discusses the dangers of "hidden" fat that is located inside the body. This layer of fat is referred to as visceral fat, and while not visible, can be found in people who wouldn't typically be seen as at risk for being overweight. This is different from subcutaneous fat (the visible layer that we all strive to lose). Visceral fat is associated with several serious health risks including colon and breast cancer, high blood pressure and diabetes. While most weight loss regimens focus on the outer layer of subcutaneous fat, Dr. Sharma highlights the importance and negative health effects of excess visceral fat. This segment includes a series of exercise and diet tips that will help cut down on visceral fat and at the same time eliminate the subcutaneous "beer belly". This segment also gives some insight into cryolipolysis, a new non-invasive procedure that targets visceral fat. Dr. Sharma also highlights the difference between proteins, calories and carbohydrates before answering some questions from the viewing audience. How fat must you be before diabetes becomes a risk?

Posted on June 11, 2011

I'm about 3 kilos overweight, but I also have a family history of diabeties. I was wondering how overweight must you be before diabetes is a risk, or in other words, if I were to get diabetes now, would it be more likely due to my family history of diabetes or my 3 kilo overweight (at 75 when normal is 73kilos) ?
