What's the best way to get rid of canker sores?

Posted on September 8, 2010

I've gotten these all throughout my youth, and they are so painful. Especially when I get them on the sides of my tongue where they scrape against my teeth and cause days of pain. I've tried various things like Kanka, etc. But it still takes about 3-5 days or more to get rid of some. Also, for whatever reason...it seems like using the Kanka helps spread the germs to another area, causing another one. Sometimes I've even gotten them in annoying areas, like on the back of my throat. It apparently comes from eating various fruits and drinking things that have citrus fruits in them, and something to do with the acid. This really irritates me...my job requires me to talk the whole day, and it's extremely difficult to properly speak when the nerves in your tongue are reacting strangely to the pain of a sore being there. I know that millions of people deal with these, some more severely than others. What is the best way to deal with them, apart from the "go to the doctor" cop-out answer?

Health Insurance cover mouth issue?

Posted on August 31, 2010

I don't have a dental coverage with my current health insurance . I recently went in for a cleaning and they saw a lesion they want to send me to a oral surgeon. I'm afraid if its cancerous I could be on the hook for a huge bill which wouldn't be covered if its considered "dental". I don't want to delay having it examined but I also don't want to ask my insurance company for fear of it being denied as pre-existing dental condition that I couldn't add coverage for. What should I do?
Thanks for the info. I'm sorry for your loss. This thing came out of the blue. Its a little white raised line at the back of my cheek. I'm only 37 and don't use any tobacco products but I'm worried. I'll see my primary doctor and ask to be seen by a ent specialist.

Can I get an oral or vaginal yeast infection from exposing these areas to baking yeast?

Posted on August 29, 2010

My roommate is currently on a wild bread making kick, and is horrible about cleaning up the kitchen whenever he is done. A small amount of baker's yeast is obviously in the doughy residue that he allows to accumulate on the range, countertop, and unwashed bowls that he leaves in the sink, and apart from the fact that this is aesthetically disconcerting, I fear that this is turning out kitchen into a breeding ground for fungus.

I know that oral thrush and vaginal yeast infections are usually caused by candida, and that baker's yeast is of another species, but is there any danger that could come from letting such messes sit untouched? If I were to inadvertently bring baker's yeast into contact with one of my mucus membranes, might it cause or make me more susceptible to an infection? If not, are there any other immediate threats to my health that this yeast could possibly cause?

I know that all of these questions would be deemed irrelevant if I were to just clean the kitchen myself, but I feel as though this would be some useful knowledge to have for future reference - as well as an opportunity to get in a fair "I told you so" with said roommate.

Excuse my paranoia, but I am simply wanting to make sure. Serious answers only, and please do not respond if you are unsure or cannot substantiate your answer. Thanks!

What would cause gum pain while brushing?

Posted on August 27, 2010

There is one spot (right in-between two of my incisors) that gives me a very sharp pain when a toothbrush bristle pokes it. I figured it was just a minor infection, that would go away, but it's been like that for almost a year now, so now I don't know what it is. Yeah, I know I need to go to the dentist (my yearly check-up is next month), but for now I was just wondering what some of you might think it is. I can't see it, either because the spot is behind my teeth. And, it will sometimes bleed if I hit it real good. So...
1) is this normal?
2) what could be the cause?
3) is mouth cancer a possibility? lol

Also, I brush twice a day and use a "whitening" pre-rinse mouthwash with alcohol and peroxide, and a fluoride mouthwash after brushing.

Aquafresh Revive touch up whitening?

Posted on August 26, 2010

So I bought this teeth whitening thing, "Aquafresh Revive", because it was realatively cheap and is supposed to take only two days. Then when I opened it and read some of the material, I realied that you're supposed to use this "in between treatments" and they want you to use a different product if you haven't whitened your teeth in the last 6 months. I have never whitened my teeth before but does that really matter or is this one of those things where they just want you to buy more crap? I know the revive stuff isn't going to give me drastic results or anything and that's cool with me, I'm just wondering what difference it will make if I've never whitened before. I mean, I'm not seeing any medical warnings or anything, so it can't be that bad right? lol

Questions about flouridated water and if its really safe?

Posted on August 20, 2010

Where we live, our water is not fluoridated so I had been buying fluoridated water for our toddler. My mother had read a book about these kinds of things that we're told are safe to put into our bodies and they really are NOT safe and fluoride was one of the things the book listed as actually being toxic. She said that's why fluoride toothpaste says NOT TO INGEST it. So I was wondering what everyone's thoughts were on fluoridated water and if its safe to give our toddler. I don't want his teeth to weaken if he doesn't have it, but my mother said that she didn't have fluoridated water when she was a child and neither did my brother and I as kids and we both have excellent teeth. Just wondered what everyone here thought.
I didn't ask this in the dental section because I figured all the dentists on there would say that "Of course, fluoride is safe..." because they make tons of money off of patients with fluoride treatments and I'm sure most of them don't buy into the theory that fluuride is actually a toxin.
I read your article by Linus Pauling and while that would be compelling back in 1967, when it was written, I believe that the full scope of the negative effects of fluoride don't surface until years later.
