What is stannous fluoride and is it better than sodium fluoride in toothpaste?

Posted on August 29, 2010

I have noticed most toothpastes contain Sodium fluoride as the main active ingredient. However, I recently had used Crest Pro Health toothpaste which contains stannous fluoride. On the tube of the Crest Pro Health it said something like, stannous fluoride may cause stains that can be removed by a dentist. I have since stopped using that toothpaste as I want to remove stains not acquire them from this stannous fluoride. Anyone know why it says that on the tube and if stannous fluoride is better or worse than sodium fluoride?

23% Carbamide Peroxide & Remineralization Gel?

Posted on August 24, 2010

I have 3 syringes here (needle less). 2 of them are "23% Carbamide Peroxide" and the other syringe is a "Remineralization Gel".

I'm wondering if this is safe to use at home to whiten and have healthier teeth.

The Remineralization Gel contains: Calcium Carbonate, Sodium Chloride, Magnesium Chloride, Sodium Phosphate disbasic sodium fluoride, sodium phosphate tribasic, non-caloric sweetener, pH controlled with phosphoric acid, FD&C Blue #1
Yes trays did come with this!

:]

In phlebotomy, sodium fluoride is used to preserve glucose in the blood for glucose tests.?

Posted on August 24, 2010

This is the same ingredient that is used in commercial toothpaste that supposedly prevents cavities. So, my question is, if sodium fluoride can preserve glucose for up to three days, then can't it also hold sugar on your teeth? Isn't sugar what causes cavities?

why do i have really bad toothaches?

Posted on August 19, 2010

it's extremely painful for me right now. i can feel it from the left side of my neck to my ear. i really have to brush my teeth every few minutes to relieve it for some time. i'm only 13.

i was just at the dentist before my aches started happening. my dentist prescribed me oral-b neutra care sodium fluoride, and a couple weeks after i've been using before i go to bed, i've been feeling aches in my teeth. i don't know if i should tell my mom or not, or stop using it. i just really need some help, because i don't even know what this fluoride stuff is for.
if you could tell me that, please do.

and if you know any easy toothache solutions i can do at home before i tell my dentist, let me know. thanks!

Have you heard of Dr. Collins?

Posted on August 9, 2010

Has anyone used Dr. Collins Restore Remineralizing Toothpaste or other products by them?

Or has someone you known used it?

I can't tolerate Fluoride toothpaste at all now that's I've been without it ( I tried to use a pure Sodium Fluoride paste the dentist gave my mom, and things have been horrible since). I am trying to look around for things and with the grinding I definately need something that will help fill in my teeth.

Alot of people have been recommending something that when I look up appears to be Nature's Gate. Feel free to tell me any personal experience with that, too.
I have checked and all the other questions dealing with a Dr. Collins are about someone that's Political or Religious. Nothing to do with a Toothpaste brand.
Hi, again by CDA~NY. I would like something more personal then advertiseing. I do not have the money to go testing crazy myself, so trying to see if anyone else has experience.

Dr. Ortho: Check all my other questions recently and read details if you want to see why I don't trust my current Dentists (yes pural and I am trying to get new ones). The one's answer to everything is noone is allergic to anything and she has never heard of side effects for anything. Although her hygentist (I think they are called) reminded her of flavoring.

I went a few months without Fluoride Toothpaste and was better with a healthy appetite. I normally eat one meal a day or two meals and then I go a day without eatting. I tried some Sodium Fluoride prescription because I read it would be good for my fillings. All the problems came back, plus I found out it's the Fluoride giving me asthma not all the skin it strips from my inner cheeks, gums, and lips like I had previous believed :/
I will try to see if I can find anything that indicates it is ADA approved. Thanks for the advice.
CDA~NY I checked the URL you found is a search portal.

This is the website for this Brand http://www.drcollinsdental.com
Dr. Ortho : The FDA has the ADA looking only at Fluoride when it comes to toothpaste. They make sure it delivers at a proper rate and is in the correct range. They do not even deal with Children's Toothpaste until it has Fluoride in it. Since their job is monitoring specificly Fluoride, all non-fluoride have no point going to them or them careing about. Prod. Wait Long & Costly.

Doesn’t the FDA approve all toothpastes?

Yes, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (www.fda.gov ) insists that manufacturers of fluoride-containing toothpaste meet certain requirements for the product’s active ingredients, product indications, claims and other qualifications. However, the FDA does not test toothpastes to verify compliance. The ADA conducts extensive laboratory tests on toothpastes to determine whether they meet specific criteria for safety and effectiveness. The ADA determines the product’s fluoride content, how it is released and its effectiveness on tooth enamel.

Mouthwash making me sick?

Posted on August 6, 2010

I've read about people experiencing negative side effects from fluoridated water, medication, and ingestion, but could this be possible from such a low dosage as one would find in fluoride rinse? At the recommendation of my dentist, I recently started using ACT Anti-Cavity Fluoride rinse, and since then I've had a lot of stomach/intestinal upset, worse than I've had in years.

-The problems come in the morning after I've used the rinse the night before. I haven't paid close enough attention to figure out if it's exactly only when I use the rinse or if it's every time I use it or what, but it seems to be the only common factor.
-I've used mouthwash in the past (Listerine Tooth Defense) which also has the same active ingredient (sodium fluoride) but in about half the dosage. But I haven't used it in a while - could I have developed some sort of sensitivity?

I know there's a lot of negativity surrounding fluoride, but I just wanted to know if anybody else has experienced this or thinks it's possible that the low amount of exposure I would get from rinsing would make me ill. Thanks in advance!
While I certainly appreciate thoughtful answers like "Don't swallow it," I assure you I am (and have been for some time) quite capable of reading the bottle and already know this. Thanks.

Which type of Listerine is best to use??

Posted on July 31, 2010

Over the past years I have started to use Listerine. I have had problems with my teeth. I mean I brush, floss, etc but I guess it's my genetics. I used to use Listerine "natural citrus" or "cool mint". I recently saw commercials for "Listerine Tooth Defense" so now I am giving this one a shot. The commercial made it seem like it would be better than others (I know it's part of marketing), but I am not sure what all of the difference is.

The main thing I notice is in the "Cool Mint" one the active ingredients are "eucalyptol, menthol, methyl salicylate, and thymol" which are antiplaque/antigingivitis.

In the "Tooth Defense" one the active ingredient is "sodium fluoride" which is an anticavity.

I guess I am just completely lost! Which should I be using? Don't I want to protect against all three? I guess I am just trying to find out which would be the best. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ANY HELP YOU CAN PROVIDE!!! =)
