Why does my Sonic Care Toothbrush stink?

I have a Sonic toothbrush for few years & recently has a musty odor. I clean it including replacement head & replace evry 6 mo as directed. Im wondering if putting the base in dishwasher worked or if it would ruin it? I have sprayed it with Clorox Clean up & that works for about 2 days. Any suggestions?
What are the advantages and disadvantages of a spinning toothbrushes vs. a sonic toothbrush?

One vibrates at thousands of times per minute and is a "full head" brush just like a toothbrush...and the other is a circular brush that literally spins. Which is really better? I have receeding gums and may need a gum graft at some point...so I've been warned to stay away from the typical brushing and get a sonic toothbrush. Spinning or regular? Which cleans better?
Also...the spinning brushes are of course a smaller brush head.
