I'm Bralynn Newby with answers to your most frequently asked dental questions. Today's question is, "Do teeth whitening toothpastes really work?" Our Lincoln dentist, Dr. Daniel Nolan has the answer. As with any advertising, you have to take teeth whitening hype with a grain of salt—or calcium carbonate—as abrasive ingredients go, which all toothpastes have to some extent. A few teeth whitening toothpastes also boast about containing a "bleach" type ingredient—typically hydrogen peroxide—but studies have shown that these really have a negligible whitening effect. So, the answer to question of, "Do teeth whitening toothpastes really work?" is yeah -- kinda, it depends. Seriously, though, they work only to the extent that your discoloration is strictly on the surface. The mild abrasives combined with the scrubbing motion of your brush, will remove topical stains from coffee, tea, wine, staining food, nicotine, etc. However, swishing your mouth with water after finishing your morning coffee and brushing and flossing daily would also reduce or possibly prevent those stains. Teeth whitening toothpaste won't lighten the natural color, or correct any discoloration due to damage. The inner part of the tooth ...

Does brushing your teeth hurt them?

Posted on March 3, 2011

Some tooth pastes claim to diminish chemical erosion. What about the physical erosion of the tooth enamel from the very act of brushing your teeth? There are particles in the tooth paste to clean the teeth, and the brush is a scrubber as well. How much do these abrasives weaken the enamel of the teeth?

What would be a good alternative to baking soda toothpaste and fluoride?

Posted on February 14, 2011

Please don't say toothpaste.

I used to brush my teeth with Arm and Hammer's baking soda and peroxide toothpaste, but my dentist told me to stop using it because it's harsh on my enamel and making my teeth weaker.

She gave me a tube of Colgate, one of the total care kinds that's mint flavored but when I use it my mouth just doesn't feel as clean as it did after using the baking soda toothpaste. It's like regular minty toothpaste are kind of sweet and just leave a layer of mint flavor instead of actually making my mouth clean.

I love how clean my mouth feels after using baking soda and baking soda toothpastes, but now I can only use them every once in a while. Are there any toothpastes that can give me the great clean feeling that baking soda does, but without being too harsh on my enamel?

Also, what else, aside from fluoride (I have hypothyroidism, which is worsened by fluoride) can be used to help strengthen tooth enamel?

How long does it for for symptoms, like tooth enamel erosion, from bulimia to go away?

Posted on February 5, 2011

mmkay brace urselves for this....i'm 15 almost 16 and i had bulimia for about 6 months (i purged maybe 6 times a week on avg. . i felt pressured to fit it size 3 jeans and went with it. it worked. but i hated what i was doing. so this past november i promised myself i'd NEVER purge again. i got support from online groups, and so far i've been clean for a little over 3 months. i haven't told any of my family or friends about my problem because i'm too ashamed too. :( ...(i've done my best to keep it a secret from them)....my face isn't swollen anymore and my hands don't show any signs of it. but i have no clue how my throat looks, or the condition of my tooth enamel. have a cavity or two...but the thing is, that i never use to gets cavities and i had really good enamel. but now it's softer and a little sensitive. my teeth don't have discoloration....but i have a dentist app. coming up soon and will she know? i'm sure i could pass off with acid erosion from citrus fruits, vinegar or soda, but is there anything i can do to help my teeth? i REALLY don't want to explain this to my dentist, and especially my parents! that can't happen it would only make things worse! i have to go to my app. if i beg not to my parents might think something's up, cause i've always liked going to the dentist. what do i do? are there any products or at home remedies to help my teeth get stronger?
PLEASE:
~no responses like "u shouldn't have done that in the first place". i'm quite aware already. :(
~don't be negative.
~answers from people who know about this would be awesome.
~please help! (otherwise i might as well be screwed...)

Is it bad for your teeth if you use Listerine right after throwing up?

Posted on December 21, 2010

I am pregnant and puking quite a bit due to morning sickness. After I throw up I rinse out my mouth with Listerine to get rid of the bad taste (brushing makes me gag). I know your stomach acid can erode your tooth enamel if you throw up a lot, and I'm afraid if I use mouthwash right after it might make the erosion worse. Is this true? Or is it okay to use mouthwash or brush right after throwing up?

Where can I buy Tek brand toothbrushes?

The dental police say they are too hard for tooth enamel and as a result they have started to disappear from pharmacies and supermarkets in recent years, however they are the only tooth brush that I can successfully clean my teeth with.

What are the side effects of bulimia? I'm still overweight after years of binging and purging.?

Posted on October 9, 2010

My eyes turn red and watery everytime I make myself throw up. I feel like they're going to pop out. Will frequent purging cause my eyes to become permanently bloodshot? What about my teeth? Will the stomach acid hurt my tooth enamel?
