Piercings and removal of wisdom teeth…?

Posted on May 24, 2011

I'm getting my wisdom teeth taken out in a week. When I went for my consultation, I had to take out my piercings for the x-rays. The only piercings of mine that I'm concerned about are my tongue, industrial, and lower cartilage piercings. I haven't been able to unscrew the ball yet on my industrial (though I've had it for almost 2 years), so I couldn't take it out for the x-ray, but it was alright. I put my lower cartilage piercing back in as soon as I could, but not my tongue because my mom was with me and she definitely wouldn't approve of it (Haa, I know). Anyway, it was out for about an hour and I had to work with it for a few minutes to get it back in. To my understanding, I need to take out all my piercings for the procedure of removing my wisdom teeth, even earrings in my lobes, and nose. Personally, the only two that seem to make sense to take out is my tongue and vertical labret since that's the area that will be worked upon, but I'm assuming that the metal may conflict with some equipment used? Anyway, I'm just wondering how long it would take for my industrial and tongue to actually close up? I'm not worried about me being physically capable of getting any other piercings back in right away other than my tongue, since I know I'm going to be pretty out of it afterwords. I guess the surgery is about 45 minutes to an hour... and I'm just really worried about my piercings closing up. :/

I've had my:
Industrial- Almost 2 years
Tongue- 3 months
Lower cartilage- Year and a half
Vertical Labret- Almost 2 years
Nose- 3 years
Lobes- Not worried about those closing up
Let's be friends. I post questions like this in search of ass holes like you.

back pain in the morning spondylothesis fusion surgery?

Posted on April 6, 2011

I have back pain in the morning. It gets better in couple of hours after I move around. It increased a lot during stress. Doctors recommend a fusion surgery as x-ray shows grade 1 spondylothesis. I have diabetes. I would like to know if anybody has this surgery and if it worked.

What can I do to help my back pain?

Posted on April 1, 2011

This is ridiculous, I'm only 22 and it feels like a strained my back, but I don't remember hurting it. Over the counter pain meds haven't helped, and I've tried ice packs, and rest, but it's not going away.
Yes, I should go to the doctor, but I don't have an extra 0 for the visit, and another 0 for the x ray. It does feel better now, so I'll just keep on taking it easy.

Do you need x-ray certificate to take x-rays as a dental assistant.?

Posted on March 14, 2011

Hi, I am currently working for an office in DC that practices general dentistry. I am not a certified assistant and have no pervious experience. I was hired anyways and now assist the dentist on regular basis. One of the things he told me to do is to take x-rays. I know I will need to be certified to do so, but he has me to do it anyways. So I want to know if you must be x-ray certified to take x-rays in all states or just some states.

Also, I was wondering in my case, do I need to be certified to polish patients' teeth? As well as do fluoride treatment for them. It seems that I am doing a lot of work for someone who is not certified. Just want to make sure if I'm doing things legally.

Thank you again.

tooth pain but dentist says nothing wrong. Why?

Posted on March 6, 2011

I have hyper sensitivity on teeth 24 and 25. I experience pain and weakness of tooth too. teeth 24 is bit crooked too. at times the pain gets unbelievable. i went as dental emergency to dentist office. they took dental x-ray and said it looks good and there are no cavities. Told me to take motrin and put me on amoxillin. it didn't help. I went again to dentist and this time they put me on stronger pain med and another antibiotic. Still not satisfied I went 3rd time and then an endodontist over there saw me and said the same thing, "nothing seems wrong". When i insisted that I continue experiencing pain, sensitivity and weakness in teeth he said I need night-guard while sleeping. However, I am still not satisfied. The pain persists and dentist keeps saying nothing is wrong. I feel my gums are inflamed. On teeth 24 and 25 there is very rapid tartar and plaque growth. Tartar attacks these 2 teeth very aggressively despite regular brushing and flossing. I got a dental cleaning about 2 weeks back and tartar again seems to grow. I don't know if the rapid tartar and plaque formation on teeth 24 and 25 is connected to pain and sensitivity but as soon as its removed it grows back very fast. I use tartar control toothpaste but no use.
i used sensodyne toothpaste for sensitivity but it didn't help at all

Hello! Can you explain what radiographic manifestations of chronic plaque associated with gingivitis looks?

Posted on February 4, 2011

Can you explain what radiographic manifestations of chronic plaque associated with gingivitis looks like, or know where I can find x-ray images of it? How do you explain what to patients what's happening with chronic gingivitis (plaque). What does it look like? Where does it come from?
Thanks for the answer, Amy. Plaque/calculus actually can be viewed on radiographs. I understand that plaque does not cause gingivitis, but there is a link between untreated "chronic" plaque/calculus removal and gingivitis. I was asked to explain the "radiograhic manifestations of chronic.." and I have ran into brick walls for days, which is why I'm reaching out for help. Is there any information regarding this topic that may help me address the issue head-on?

Dental questions: gingivitis and wisdom teeth?

Posted on January 11, 2011

Okay well I went to the dentist today and the assistant was cleaning my teeth and said I had "gingivitis". Yes I've heard of it but what is it and how do I treat this???
also,
The dentist said I would have my wisdom teeth in in about 2.5-3 years. I'm only 14!!! But my dad got his very early too. EEK! But I looked at an x ray they took of my mouth and all my wisdom look perfectly straight? None of them are sideways or whacky. And I looked in the way back of my mouth and it seems like their is PLENTY of room. I've got kind of a big mouth :) and jaw. But my question is: I won't need to have them removed if their perfectly okay will I? I mean I know most people do, but that's only if they are messed and crooked right?

thanks in advance to anybody who knows anything about my questions :)

Should I see an orthopedic specialist for my severe back pain?

Posted on January 10, 2011

For the past few months I have been experiencing sever back pain when I am lying down. It doesn't start off hurting but every few hours I will wake up to the point where I can't sleep anymore dur to the severity of the pain. I've seen my PCP about this 3 times already and she did labs and an X-ray and said she doesn't see anything wrong with my back. It is getting worse, to the point I can hardly get out of bed anymore.

*long, detailed question* Gum issues, unsure as to what this could be?

Posted on December 26, 2010

For the last several months, I have had reoccurring lumps of sorts on my gums. They started about a day after my last dental visit, where I had x-rays and all of the other usual dentist checkup-y things done and they didn't find any abscesses or any signs of oral cancer, or anything wrong except for some cavities that needed to be filled and early signs of gum disease due to poor dental care when I was younger and lack of checkups for a year or two. As far as I know abscesses or oral cancer (at least not in the stage of what I would consider to be a tumor, if it were cancer) don't just "appear" in a day after having x-rays and a full workup done on my mouth. I do have 2 teeth with cavities in the back of my mouth, which I think I have had for a while (one on each side, actually below where the lumps are) but the dentist didn't think either of them were THAT bad, but should be filled as soon as possible, though due to me not having any insurance he didn't see any reason that with proper personal dental care it couldn't be taken care of a little bit later when things were more financially stable and I had my insurance issue settled.. and then I could come in for a deep cleaning because I have relatively bad plaque/tartar buildup on my lower front teeth in the back, possibly elsewhere as else, I honestly don't remember what he said. I do have my wisdom teeth coming in slowly, but they are ONLY coming in on the bottom, nowhere near where my issues are. For whatever reason, the x-ray showed that I don't have top wisdom teeth.

Anyway, I have these lumps on my gums, and everything I have ever read about abscesses says that they cause pain, usually immense pain, but mine don't cause any pain at all. They're not even a tiny bit sore, and they go away intermittently but then raise back up, usually in the morning when I wake up. It doesn't feel like they "drain" so much as inflame or swell. They are usually always above the back teeth on my gums, the one on the right is about the size of a jellybean, and is newer than the one on the left. The one on the right feels like I can move it with my tongue, like I can push it around and lift up part of it with my tongue, almost like it's leaf shaped with part of it being attached and the remainder of it being movable, but this is a new thing and before the lump has always just been a solid lump, never anything movable. The one on the left is smaller, and usually less inflamed than the right one usually. They feel as though they're filled with something, though I've read and heard that when an abcess bursts there is a VERY bitter and unpleasant taste in your mouth from the pus. When my... well, whatever they are, go down, I don't taste anything in my mouth, much less anything bitter or gross, and they don't hurt when they go down or when they re-appear. They slightly vary in size, but are always smaller than a jellybean, which is the biggest they ever get, and they don't get that big very often. The one on the right is pretty flat, and the ones on the left are usually more lumpy. As for color... the last I checked they are the same pinkish color of my gums, not white or yellow or anything. I don't have any underlying conditions, I am otherwise medically healthy.

Any ideas as to what this is or how to go about treating it? I went on a cycle of antibiotics back in September when I first was terrified I had dental abcesses, but they didn't go away. My GP thought that maybe they weren't dental abcesses or a dental infection... but wasn't sure what they were since there was no pain and they didn't go away with antibiotics. I can't get to the doctor/dentist again until March at the earliest due to insurance, again.

EDIT: As I have posted this question a couple of times, a few of the answers I have recieved have believed it to be a clogged salivary gland. The fact that this is on my upper, outer gum leads me to believe it is not in fact a Mucocele, as those are common on the roof of the mouth, under the tongue, and on the bottom lip / possibly cheek, etc. Mine is above my very last tooth on the right side on the top.. it wouldn't make sense for it to be there I don't think. Also, everything I have looked up has said that these blocked salivary glands are usually blueish in color, and mine are pink just like the gums around them.
Oh, in addition to everything I posted, I wanted to state that the one on the right is at the very very top of my gums, almost to a point where it would connect with my cheek but slightly lower than that, still not connected to my cheek. I still feel like I can lift / turn the growth or whatever it is with my tongue, and it feels pretty flat.. almost like a blister that has deflated and flattened.. but is still solid.
