What should I eat to prevent mouth ulcers/ gingivitis (ie diet for a healthy mouth)?

Posted on July 17, 2010

I have almost chronic mouth ulcers, and gingivitis, I brush my teeth, and have started taking Lysine. I don't know what else to do. I think a change in diet would work, but I was hoping someone would know what would work best. I know to avoid sugars, and acidic foods. I need help, please!

  1. keeping your mouth clean – brushing, flossing and rinsing is good but i would avoid mouth washes just in case thats part of the problem. stay away from high acidic drinks or if you do- rinse your mouth with water— its hard to avoid mouth ulcers if you are prone to them and using the meds that your dentist prescribed will help

  2. ground nuts, beans and its better you use b complex tablets

  3. Mouth ulcers can be caused by a variety of things, Spicy food, trauma, stress etc. Gingivitis can be completely reversed by brushing and flossing. Brushing alone will not do it, I say this over and over on this message board, you HAVE to floss everyday to remove the stuff in-between your teeth that the tooth brush can not get to. Bleeding means infection which can also contribute to your mouth ulcers by giving you a lower immune response. Because your white blood cells are constantly trying to fight the infection, it means that your body is more susceptible to other problems. Eliminate the source of infection and see if the mouth ulcers improve. Also taking a multi- vitamin with plenty of folic acid and b12 can’t hurt either. Again you have to floss. There is no getting around it.

  4. Recurrent mouth ulcers can be caused by food irritation (too hot, too hard), tooth bite, or just like happening to me : hormonal imbalance, so matter how you floss daily, avoid spiciy & irritated food,, you will still have mouth ulcers. If the hormone imbalance is the caused, you need hormone treatment. In case of me, I was free of ulcers when I was pregnant, merely because of the hormonal impact. You need to consult your doctor and tell him/her that the ulcer is recurring. The other cause could be due to vitamin C defficiency, you need to take vit C, could be from fruit or for simplicity, take vit C

  5. The nicotine from smoking causes plaque to stick to your teeth which is a major cause of gingivitis and "gum disease". So, if you smoke, try to quit or at least cut way down and brush after smoking. Also, munching on fresh fruits and veggies, like carrot sticks and apples play a part in keeping teeth and gums healthy. Regular visits to your dentist will also help. As far as the ulcers go, you may have to have something prescribed by your dentist for this. Also ask if there is any particular food that might help lower, if not completely eliminate, your risk of mouth ulcers. Also see if he/she can find out "what" is causing the ulcers. Sometimes other health problems are the underlying cause of dental problems. It’s worth checking out.

  6. Fresh veggies!!!!

  7. i think it would be advisable to use GUMEX.its a lotion and it will certainly help you.

  8. Try not to eat anything spicy, only makes it worse, trust me I know first hand. Plus get a good medicine for mouth ulcers, or canker sores, it will help until they heal. Hang in there, I do know what pain you are going through my friend. Maybe you could ask your druggist what type of medicine he recommends??

  9. You can also get a prescription mouthwash (ask your dentist) that will help the ulcers heal faster. It also numbs your mouth slightly for awhile, which gives some relief from the pain.

  10. i get them all the time. there caused by acid and sometimes organic stuff like orange juce. the best thing for me was canpho phaniec. i don’t think i spelled it right but it’s something like that.

  11. More vegetables, more flossing, flossing, flossing. Brush between meals, cut sugars, sodas and acids.

  12. no idea

  13. There are a couple more steps that will help you and promote tooth heath as well. The first is floss daily, use a germicide mouth wash like scope after every meal and when you brush. Every three months use a betadine or prov iodine swab to apply on the gums around each tooth. The dentist cal give you an oral rinse that has a high % of peroxide in it. The gum that has Xylitrol is the Best to chew and 2-3 pieces a day! Good Teeth, healthy mouth!

  14. apply glycerin on the ulcer, eat a balanced diet include a lot of juicy fruits, do not skip meals, drink a lot of water, take care

  15. brush a lot after eating. keep doing what you have been doing. you are doing great
